Two Simple Ways to Improve Your Search Engine Rankings Today!
If getting to the top of search engine results isn’t your focus, it should be. These all-important rankings improve your status and exposure, crucial to any online business. Aplus.Net offers two easy ways to get ahead of the competition. First, get your own IP address. Having your own IP gives your site a legitimacy that often ranks it ahead of other sites. Aplus.Net’s Pro and ePro plans come with their own unique IP address for this very reason. Or, get a 10-year domain. Search engines like Google favor websites that are registered for 10 years, as opposed to those just registered for one or two. Buying a longer-term domain name not only lets you avoid the hassle of constant renewals, it also helps your search rankings. Remember, if you’re not maximizing your search engine presence, you can bet that your competitors are. Don’t put it off: Update your domain or hosting plan today.

| Expert Opinion:
The Facts on Net Neutrality
Imagine this scenario: You use your favorite search engine, as you do every day, to find a local business. But the nearby hardware store you’re looking for doesn’t show up. Instead, you get redirected to the new big chain store in town. This may seem harmless, and some people might not even notice. In reality, though, it’s unfair to the small hardware shop, and it’s unfair to you, forcing on you something you’re not looking for.
Soon enough, this might not be a hypothetical situation. Legislation is currently making its way through Congress to change the Internet’s structure and the very way it operates. Like many people and organizations who want the Internet to remain a free and open society, Aplus.Net supports “net neutrality” provisions to this legislation to ensure that the level playing field that is today’s Internet is not destroyed.

Business Center
Aplus.Net’s Small Business Center is here! Join us each month as we explore resources and tips on what it takes to manage a successful small business in today’s economy, and how to use the Internet to grow your business. We kick it off this month with a rundown of some handy web resources for the Internet-minded entrepreneur.
The best place to start our journey is the U.S. government’s own agency dedicated to small business issues. The United States Small Business Administration, or SBA, was created in 1953 to “maintain and strengthen the nation's economy by aiding, counseling, assisting and protecting the interests of small businesses and by helping families and businesses recover from national disasters.”
It may seem unusual for the government to take such an interest into what many assume is a small part of the American economy. The truth, however, is quite the opposite: Small businesses are an enormous part of our economy. According to an August 2005 press release, the SBA states:
“Small business drives the U.S. economy by providing jobs for over half of the private workforce … Data and research shows that small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all firms, they create more than half of the private non-farm gross domestic product, and they create 60 to 80 percent of the net new jobs … In 2004, there were an estimated 23,974,500 businesses in the U.S. Of the 5,683,700 firms with employees, 5,666,600 were small firms (fewer than 500 employees) … American entrepreneurs are creative and productive, and these numbers prove it.”2
The SBA’s website offers helpful rundowns on how to start, finance, and manage a new business. There’s also a useful section dedicated to business opportunities. A page on disaster recovery outlines the “long-term, low-interest” loans available to small businesses that have suffered from natural disasters, and offers advice on how to minimize damage if a disaster hits your region.
Even if your business is already past the point of being able to profit from this information, it’s still a good idea to check out the SBA’s website to get the government’s perspective on small business. In the process, you just might stumble on to some benefits you didn’t know you were entitled to. So take advantage—after all, the SBA is funded by your tax dollars. Subcontracting, instructions on registering your business in the government’s contractor database, contract procurement assistance, and links to federal business opportunities are just a few more of the useful resources offered by the SBA. Check out the complete SBA website here.
Briefly, here are a few more current Internet articles that feature constructive tips for small businesses.

Keeping your address current is more important than you realize,
and the success of your website just might depend on it. For example: “Ted” was
a happy and hard-working customer who failed to notify Aplus.Net
when his email address changed. Ted didn’t realize that he
was missing important emails notifying him that his domain name
was about to expire. Because of this simple mistake, Ted lost not
only his domain name to a competitor; he also lost countless hours
of hard work and months of progress. Don’t make Ted’s
mistake—Keep your information current!
