SAN DIEGO -- August 5, 1999
Aplus.Net, a national Internet service provider, has added the Sprint Internet
backbone to its multi-homed operations. Added to direct connections with
MCI WorldCom and PSINet, this increases Aplus.Net's direct backbone connection
to encompass almost the entire Internet, unlike most other Internet service
providers. In an independent test by Boardwatch magazine, Aplus.Net had one
of the highest access rates in the industry, outperforming AT&T Worldnet;
Microsoft Network MSN; EarthLink; Concentric Net and others.
The Internet is a set of private networks or "backbones" tied together through so-called "peering points". These peering points are the intersections of the Information Super Highway. Just as with automobile traffic, fewer intersections means more speed. The multi-home approach eliminates the intersections between Aplus.Net and the Internet, thereby creating direct links for their customers. This translates into faster connections to websites, faster downloads and "real time" performance of online games.
Aplus.Net is a rapidly growing, innovative, state-of-the-art Internet service provider, with over 1000 points of presence in 49 states. Services include connectivity, web hosting and ecommerce. Aplus.Net offers DSL services in 12 major markets nationwide, as well. Aplus.Net uses award winning equipment from Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Ascend, a division of Lucent Technologies. They use state of the art billing and customer care software by Rodopi Software (www.rodopi.com) along with their multi-homed direct backbone connections to MCI WorldCom (NASDAQ: WCOM) , Sprint (NYSE:FON) and PSINet (NASDAQ: PSIX).
Sprint was the first long distance voice telephone carrier to offer a commercial Internet service with the formation of SprintLink in 1992. Currently, the Sprint IP Services network backbone encompasses about 23% of the Internet market. Unlike most other public TCP/IP network service providers, who maintain network routers connected by physical links leased from long distance carriers, Sprint operates and maintains both network routing and the underlying physical network. Sprint's network is 100% fiber optic and is designed to recover from a fiber cut in 50 milliseconds, thereby preventing disruption of service to customers.
Aplus.Net is a division of Abacus America, Inc. 10350 Barnes Canyon Rd. San Diego, CA 92121 Abacus America, Inc. is a privately held corporation.
