San Diego, CA , May 11, 2004 – Aplus.Net (www.aplus.net), the leading Internet presence and Web hosting provider to small and medium-sized businesses, announced today that they successfully deflected the Sasser worm that has been plaguing the Internet for over a week.
W32/Sasser.A, also known as Sasser, is a fast-spreading worm that seeks out
machines with the Windows vulnerability known as Local Security Authority Subsystem
Service (LSASS). While it does not appear to alter or destroy information, Sasser
does cause significant performance degradation.
“To protect us and our customers, we invested heavily in the latest firewall
technology,” said John Martis, executive vice president of operations
at Aplus.Net. “Our data center is not only protected by multiple firewalls,
but it is closely monitored 24/7 by engineers at our Network Operations Center.”
Discovered April 30, the Sasser worm has affected more than 1 million PCs worldwide, and has mutated into four variants: Sasser.A, Sasser.B, Sasser.C and Sasser.D. Most vulnerable are PC users running Microsoft Windows 2000, NT and XP operating systems.
Network security firms, including Network Associates and Symantec, have issued
software updates to combat this worm. Microsoft issued a patch for the LSASS
vulnerability on April 13, and now offers a Sasser clean-up tool on its website.
